Gage Cousineau

Where were you born?
Chicago Heights, IL

Where did you grow up?
In/around Bowling Green, KY

What schools did you attend?
For undergrad I attended Berea College for a health and human performance BA and a philosophy minor, then got my MS in exercise and sport science from Eastern Kentucky University.

When did you start weightlifting?
I suppose I technically started my weightlifting practice while running track in undergrad; I probably enjoyed the power cleans and back squats more than my actual events. Once I graduated and no longer had distance-running obligations I immediately went to work on getting a big back squat, and the classic lifts followed. Over the last 2 years my training has been focused on making my snatch, clean, and jerk as big and technically sound as possible.

What made you start weightlifting?
I started weightlifting out of admiration of the greats of the sport and for the grace, power, and aggression inherent to the lifts.

When did you come to SLSC?
I started shadowing classes in September of 2025

What do you enjoy about SLSC?
SLSC attracts people who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and chase bigger weights without creating an atmosphere like you’re walking into a warzone a la circa 2000 Westside Barbell. Just good people looking to improve.

What do you enjoy about coaching?
My strongest professional urge is to teach, and coaching is a great place to hone and execute my pedagogical skills concerning my passion; strength and conditioning. I have the privilege of being entrusted with the safety and progress of individuals who are pursuing self-improvement.

What would you say to someone who is considering trying out SLSC but is unsure?
Just give it a try. The best time to start might have been however many years ago but the next best is ASAP.
